Mount Kinabalu, the tallest mountain in South-East Asia

By Clarence Chan

Do you know which mountain is the tallest mountain in South-East Asia? It's Mount Kinabalu in Sabah, East Malaysia. It is part of the Crocker Mountain Range and stands at 4,101 m above sea level (that's about 13,500 feet).

Here are a few little-known facts about Mount Kinabalu:

1. Its name is derived from the Kadazan words 'aki' and 'nabalu' which together means 'the sacred place of the revered dead'. The main indigenous people of Sabah are the Kadazans who have venerated the mountain for generations. They believe that upon death, the spirits of their dead congregate at the top of Mount Kinabalu, hence the name.

2. The mountain's peak is just below the snow belt, meaning it is not snow capped. The mean temperature falls by about 2 degrees C after every 1,000 feet ascent. Since the average temperature at sea level in Sabah is about 30 degrees C and the top of Mount Kinabalu is about 13,500 feet high, it means that the temperature at the top of the mountain is about 3-4 degrees C, just above freezing point (which is at 0 degrees C).

3. Since the peak of Mount Kinabalu is not snow-covered, it makes it possible for anyone in good health to climb to the top without specialized snow training or equipment. Thus each year about 30,000 to 40,000 people climb this mountain which has become Sabah's biggest tourist attraction. Should you make it to the top, you will be awarded a certificate for your achievement!

4. About half-way up Mount Kinabalu is Kinabalu National Park. This is a beautiful area of various types of accommodation, eateries, souvenir shops and the administrative center for climbers intending to climb the mountain. It follows that Kinabalu National Park is where you begin your ascent. Kinabalu National Park and Mount Kinabalu itself has been declared a World Heritage Site.

Sabah and Mount Kinabalu await all with their unique natural beauty, flora and fauna.
